Catoctin edges Smithsburg

Smithsburg fell victim to three forfeits and the Leopards dropped a 42-38 decision to Catoctin on Wednesday in their home opener.

It was Smithsburg’s first match under new head coach Matthew Crutchfield. Crutchfield replaced longtime coach Joe Dietrich, who retired earlier this season, ending his long, Hall of Fame career.

Smithsburg honored Dietrich before the match as a number of his former wrestlers came returned to the school to pay their respects. Dietrich is a member of the National Wrestling, Maryland State Wrestling and Washington County Sport Hall of Fames for his 47 years of coaching.
