Mr. John Thomas Angle, 79, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Quincy Village in Waynesboro, following a brief illness.
Born on November 6, 1946, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Vera “Jane” (Swope) Angle.
John was a proud graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. He went on to earn degrees in choral conducting and organ performance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He devoted his life to music and education, sharing his gifts with countless students during his many years of teaching in the Waynesboro School District.
A dedicated church musician throughout his life, John served congregations at First United Methodist Church of Greencastle; Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle; Trinity Lutheran Church, Greencastle; St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chambersburg; and Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. He also spent many joyful years as rehearsal accompanist for the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus, where his musical skill and warm sense of humor were cherished. Music truly was his life’s passion, and he especially loved inspiring young people—so much so that he once gifted his niece Naomi her first French horn.
For many years he was the proprietor of the Colonial Flower Shop in Greencastle.
John also had a soft spot for animals, especially his beloved cat, Maggie. He enjoyed simple pleasures, including spirited family games of backyard croquet—a tradition passed down through many generations. His wry humor and gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew him.
He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Lodge #443 in Greencastle and the American Guild of Organists.
John is survived by his life partner of 44 years, Edward L. Stanley of Greencastle; his sister, Shirley (Angle) Tannenbaum, and her spouse, Susan Swope, of South Mountain, PA; and two nieces, Rebecca Jo Tannenbaum of Hamden, CT, and Naomi Ruth Tannenbaum of Mt. Lebanon, PA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by many cousins.
A memorial service will be held sometime in 2026.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to any of the following: Antietam Humane Society, 8513 Lyons Rd., Waynesboro, PA 17268; Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S.
