James Arthur “Jim” Hess, 71, of Waynesboro, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, November 20, 2025, in his home.
Born February 3, 1954 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Kenneth H. and Mary Jane (Baylor) Hess.
Jim was a graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School with the Class of 1972.
Following graduation, he went on to work as a carpenter and mason tender, later working alongside his father, Kenneth H. Hess. In June 1986, he along with his brother, Danny took over the family business, Hess Custom Builders which was still in operation until his recent retirement.
Jim was a lifelong member of Rouzerville Fish and Game Association. Growing up on the family farm in the Roadside area of Waynesboro, he learned the value of hard work and carried that dedication throughout his life. He loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting. He also enjoyed collecting old tools that reflected his appreciation for craftsmanship and history. But above all, he treasured time spent with his sons and grandchildren, who he dearly loved.
He is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Debra K. (Stitely) Hess who he married December 4, 1976; three sons, Michael J. Hess (Jessie), Matthew J. Hess (Deanna) and Craig D. Hess (Jenna), all of Waynesboro; ten grandchildren, Laine, Lauren, Sam, Erica, Jim, Dave, Joe, Ruby, Cade & Lily; siblings, Robert K. Hess of Waynesboro, Barbara A. Kantner of Reading, PA, David B. Hess of Millerton, PA and Joseph E. Hess, Samuel S. Hess, Elizabeth J. Hess and Daniel H. Hess, all of Waynesboro; and many nieces and nephews along with a host of extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant daughter, Julie K. Hess who passed away in 1989; and one sister, Mary L. Piper who passed away March 7, 2016.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 25, 2025 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
Private graveside services will be held in Ringgold Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Parr officiating.
