Sydney Hudson Barnes, 21, of Greencastle, PA, tragically passed away on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, surrounded by the warm love of her family.
Born on September 17, 2004, in Hagerstown, Maryland, Sydney was the beloved daughter of Robert B. and Kerri A. (Hudson) Barnes of Greencastle. She was a cherished sister to her older brother, Nicholas Barnes and his wife, Rachel Dougherty, and to her younger sister, Caroline Barnes. Sydney’s best friend and the love of her life, Adam Horst of Greencastle, remained steadfastly by her side until the time of her passing.
Sydney was a 2023 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. At the time of her passing, she was a junior at Millersville University. Sydney will be posthumously awarded a bachelor’s degree by Millersville and was planning to attend graduate school to prepare for a career in the medical field. A dedicated student athlete, she was a proud member of Millersville’s women’s golf program and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Sydney golfed in 27 different events while at Millersville and recorded the first hole-in-one in the history of the program. She was recognized as a Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar and a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete.
Described by her Millersville community as “an exceptional student, a dedicated teammate, and a friend to many,” Sydney approached both her academics and athletics with passion, grace, and determination. She was deeply humble, embodying perseverance, kindness, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Sydney’s family listed the three most important elements of her life as her faith, her family, and her friends.
Sydney’s Catholic faith was the foundation of her life and the source of her hope, joy, and love. As a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Greencastle, she lived out her faith with unwavering devotion to God. Her relationship with Christ shaped how she loved, served, and encouraged those around her. Through her participation in church as a parishioner, in Young Life, and in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she was able to unify others in Christ wherever she went. Sydney found peace and purpose in her faith and shared it willingly through her words and actions. Her devotion to the Christian life impacted countless individuals and was the cornerstone upon which her life was built.
Sydney also had a deep love for nature and enjoyed being outdoors whether she was golfing, hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, swimming, or simply spending time with her friends and her beloved dog, Oliver.
Sydney’s life was full of promise, and while her time on Earth was far too short, her impact was profound. She will be remembered always for her kind heart and the light she brought to the lives of so many.
From a young age, Sydney dreamed of saving lives through medicine. In her passing, she fulfilled that dream by giving the gift of life through organ donation, her final act of selflessness and compassion. Her memory will continue to be honored for generations to come through The Sydney Hudson Barnes Memorial Scholarship that will assist students pursuing further education in the medical field.
Sydney is survived by her grandparents William and Patricia Barnes of Greencastle and William and Karen Hudson of Greencastle, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Sydney’s family will hold a private Mass of Christian Burial. All who knew and loved Sydney are warmly invited to a casual celebration of Sydney’s life in the form of an open house at the Waynesboro Country Club, 11000 Country Club Road, Waynesboro, PA on Friday, October 31, 2025.
