HAGERSTOWN – Hagerstown Community College is set to kick off its Nonprofit Management four-course series next week, providing in-depth training for nonprofit leaders on everything from mission alignment to grant funding.
The program, priced at $680 for the full series or $170 per individual course, runs over select Wednesdays from Oct. 22 to Dec. 17 at the college’s main campus, with sessions held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Seniors qualify for a reduced rate of $73 per course, though residential requirements may apply. Scholarships are also available to offset costs, and courses can be taken standalone or sequentially. All classes are led by instructor L. Dougherty.
The series begins with “The Big Picture: Mission, Vision & Goals” (Course Code: PRD-955-D), scheduled for Oct. 22 and 29. This introductory session offers a brief overview of the nonprofit landscape, including startup considerations. Participants will learn to craft mission statements, keep activities mission-focused and prevent “mission creep” via strategic planning and goal-setting.
Next, “Nonprofit Organizational Tools” (PRD-956-E) takes place Nov. 5 and 12. The course emphasizes operational efficiency, covering planning and running effective meetings, crafting internal and external communications plans, decision-making tools, financial management, volunteer recruitment strategies and program evaluation techniques.
On Nov. 19, 26 and Dec. 3, “Building an Engaged Board” (PRD-957-E) will equip staff and board members with strategies for recruitment, onboarding, development and governance. Attendees will explore the board’s roles in advocacy and ambassadorship to foster purposeful engagement.
The series wraps up with “Grant Writing” (PRD-574-F) on Dec. 10 and 17. Tailored for those handling funding pursuits, it delves into developing grant strategies, opportunity searches, proposal writing, storytelling and navigating the review process.
HCC administrators highlighted the series’ practical focus amid rising needs in the nonprofit sector. “These courses deliver actionable skills to amplify community impact,” a spokesperson noted. Registration is available through the college’s Instant Enrollment system, with limited spots filling quickly. For details, readers may visit the HCC website or scan the promotional QR code.
The initiative bolsters HCC’s role in Washington County’s workforce development, supporting nonprofits in areas like health, education and social services.
