5 Things to do this weekend

Bundle up for a night of solstice magic. Buttonwood Nature Center is set to host its fourth annual Winter Solstice Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Red Run Park. This family-friendly event marks the longest night of the year, a time recognized since ancient times for celebrating the “return of the sun.” Attendees can enjoy storytelling by Sam Little around a winter bonfire, hands-on activities for children and warm refreshments including hot chocolate. The Tri-State Astronomers club will provide telescopes for stargazing, while local vendors will offer holiday snacks and crafts. Jessica Watson, assistant director of Buttonwood, emphasized the significance of experiencing the solstice together as a community. The event is free and open to the public, with attendees encouraged to dress warmly for the outdoor festivities.

Grab a pickle and a pup. The Holiday Pup & Pickle Fest is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center in Boonsboro, Maryland. This unique event invites attendees to sip, shop and sample a variety of pickle-themed products while also celebrating their furry friends. New this year, guests can bring their dogs to enjoy a pooch parade and browse dozens of vendors offering holiday gifts, dog-related items and pickle treats. The festival will feature live music performances by Drew Adams, Jack & Butch’s Shenanigans and Jeff Taulton, making it a festive outing for families and pet lovers alike. Admission includes pickle samples and access to all vendor booths.

Attendees will gather around a warm fire in the Institute’s cabin, where costumed interpreters will share enthralling stories from the 18th century, exploring the history of winter solstice celebrations and the folklore that has influenced these customs over the years.
