5 things to do this weekend

Families can jump into fun and fitness as area YMCAs host their annual Healthy Kids Day, a free celebration focused on keeping children active and engaged through the summer months. LocalNews1.org will join in the festivities with a booth featuring community news coverage, prizes and kid-friendly activities. The event takes place April 18 at the YMCA of Hagerstown, 1100 Eastern Blvd. N., from 10 a.m. to noon, and at the YMCA of Waynesboro, 810 E. Main St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., then continues April 24 at the Chambersburg YMCA, 570 E. McKinley St., from 5 to 7:30 p.m., offering families across Franklin and Washington counties an opportunity to connect, play and learn about healthy habits together.

History comes alive again this weekend as Renfrew Museum & Park in Waynesboro kicks off its 2026 season with the annual Opening Day Celebration, offering visitors a full day of free family fun and living history. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18, guests can explore historic structures, watch hearth cooking and textile demonstrations, try period games, and view antique farm machinery while learning about the soon-to-be-completed Renfrew Mill. The event showcases the region’s rich farming heritage and the families who once called Renfrew home, inviting everyone to step back in time and experience the traditions that shaped the valley.

Franklin County is rolling out the red, white and blue for an epic community celebration as downtown Chambersburg hosts the America250PA Parade on Saturday, April 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event invites youth groups, car clubs, veterans, civic organizations, marching bands and community performers to “roll, ride, march or dance” in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. Organized as part of Pennsylvania’s statewide America250PA initiative, the parade will showcase Franklin County’s creativity, heritage and community spirit—with participants competing for $5,000 in prizes.

From cockpit climbs to youth flights, aviation enthusiasts of all ages can take off into history at the Hagerstown Aviation Museum’s Aviation Adventure Day on April 18. The event, running 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum’s Fairchild Dome Hangar, 18450 Showalter Road, Hagerstown, marks the first of seven Aviation Adventure Days planned for 2026 and invites families to explore historic aircraft, including a newly acquired A-10 Warthog. Hosted in partnership with EAA Young Eagles, the event will offer free flights for youth ages 8 to 17, while visitors can also experience open cockpit flights aboard a WWII training aircraft for a $200 donation; all flights are weather permitting. Admission is by donation, and the day aims to engage the community in hands-on aviation education and history.

Get ready to pucker up for a “dill-lightful” time as Waynesboro welcomes its Pickle Party downtown on Saturday, April 18. From noon to 5 p.m., the event will fill Main Street with pickle-themed food, local vendors, family activities and shopping, all celebrating the town’s love of creativity—and cucumbers. Hosted in downtown Waynesboro, the festival invites visitors to explore local businesses, sample quirky treats and savor some tangy fun at this community celebration.
