5 things to do this weekend

Little Whos are invited to out-grinch the Grinch when Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. hosts its “Welcome to Whosboro” celebration at the former Elks Lodge, 66 W. Main St., from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. The family event features Whoville-themed crafts, treats, giveaways, story time and a special performance with Mr. Grinch, with children ages 2 and older admitted for $5 and parents attending for free. Organizers encourage kids to come in costume for a chance to win prizes and to bring plenty of holiday cheer—whether or not the Grinch approves.

Candlelight and chart-toppers will collide as music from Coldplay and Imagine Dragons illuminates Cortland Mansion in Hagerstown. The glow-filled tribute, presented Friday, Dec. 19, from 8:45 to 10 p.m., transforms the 19411 Cortland Drive venue into a flickering sanctuary for fans of both bands. The 60-minute performance offers a live, multi-sensory experience where melodies meet mood lighting, creating a setting as enchanting as the songs themselves. Doors open 45 minutes before the show, and attendees must arrive on time — even the late can’t “fix you.” Readers can purchase tickets here.

Nothing chases the chill away like a steaming mug of apple cider. The Washington County Free Library will host “Cup of Warmth” from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at its location, 100 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. Guests can learn how cider is made and what life is like running an orchard while sipping the finished product. The event offers a cozy way to celebrate the season — complete with complimentary samples.

A forest of festivity is taking root in Greencastle. Antrim Spring Farm will host its first annual Festival of Trees from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, inviting families to stroll through a dazzling display of Christmas trees decorated by local businesses. The free community event promises plenty of holiday cheer with complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, plus a chance to tour the venue’s newest feature—a covered deck designed to accommodate weddings, parties and other celebrations year-round.

There’s no better way to welcome the return of the sun than by gathering under the stars. Buttonwood Nature Center in Waynesboro will host its sixth annual Winter Solstice Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21. The free, family-friendly event features storytelling by Bruce Rowland around a bonfire, children’s crafts, popcorn garland-making and a hot chocolate station sponsored by Martin’s Grocery Store. Guests can browse local vendors, view the winter sky through telescopes provided by the Tri-State Astronomers, and even enter a raffle for a handmade lap quilt.
