WAYNESBORO — The Waynesboro Area School District is gearing up for the start of the 2024-25 academic year with several important updates and events for students and families.

Key Dates and Events

The first day of school for K-12 students in Waynesboro is set for Tuesday, Aug. 20. Fall CareerTech students will begin their classes on Thursday, Aug. 22. Students attending CareerTech during the fall semester are not required to report to Waynesboro Area Senior High School on Aug. 20 or 21. Detailed morning arrival procedures for CareerTech students are available in the summer edition of the WASHS family newsletter.

Back to School Night and Orientation

WASD will host a back-to-school night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Additionally, the B2I Freshman & New Student Orientation for incoming members of the Class of 2028 and new WASHS students will take place on the same day from 4:30 to 6 p.m. These events provide an opportunity for students and families to familiarize themselves with the school environment and meet faculty members.

Student Schedules and Supplies

Student schedules for the upcoming school year were released on and are accessible through the Sapphire community web portal. Parents and students can view the schedules by advancing the date to the first week of school for fall schedules and to the end of January for spring semester schedules. Any concerns or questions regarding schedules should be directed to grade-level guidance counselors via email. WASHS students are reminded to bring their charged Chromebooks, a folder, a notebook and writing utensils on the first day of school. Specific instructions for supplies and uniforms for Fall CareerTech students will be provided by Justin Sholes.

Health and Documentation Requirements

The district has issued reminders regarding health documentation requirements. All 11th-grade students must submit documentation of a physical exam completed after July 1, 2022, to the WASHS nurse’s office by Nov. 1, 2024. Additionally, 12th grade students are required to have their second meningococcal vaccine administered after their 16th birthday. Questions regarding health documentation can be directed to school nurse Amy Gebhart at [email protected].

Online Learning Options

Families planning for their children to be online learners should contact Sheri Helfrick, the guidance secretary, as soon as possible to make the necessary schedule adjustments. Online courses are offered through Apex, Edmentum or Schoology, depending on student needs. For further information, families are encouraged to review the summer edition of the WASHS family newsletter and the approved WASD 2024-25 calendar, both available on the district’s website. Any additional questions can be directed to the WASHS main office at 717-762-1191 x1200 or the building secretary, Denise McCleaf, at [email protected].
