High school track and field season officially came to a close last week, but not before the Smithsburg girls went out with a bang.

The Leopards close out their spring as state champions after winning three events and accumulating 112 points at last week’s MPSSAA Class 1A State Championships, held at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

Smithsburg won three relays and had a big day from speedster Jenna Howe, who posted runner-up finishes in the 100, 200, and 400, while also guiding the Leopards’ 4×400 squad to victory.

North Hagerstown crowned a state champion of its own at the Class 3A meet, with Lauren Stine seizing the win in 3,200, while also taking second in the 1,600.

With the book closed on track season, only two teams from the Local.News area still remain in the postseason. Waynesboro’s baseball squad will be playing for a berth in the PIAA tournament when it takes on Wilson on Tuesday in the District 3-6A Third-Place Game. Chambersburg’s softball team will also play Tuesday, hosting Central Dauphin in the District 3-6A semifinal round.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
