MERCERSBURG – The Waynesboro Indians varsity wrestling team made the trip to James Buchanan on Thursday night and came away with a 60-6 victory in their Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet.

Waynesboro won nine of the 10 contested matches, including six by fall. Isaac Bautista recorded the fastest pin of the contest when he pinned Clayton Gearhart in 32 seconds in the 215-pound bout.

Garrett Lowans (152) registered a first-period pin in 1:11, while Calvin Myers (145) pinned Leland Hissong in 1:12.

“There were some nice matches,” said Waynesboro head coach David Swink. “Caden Shockey’s match was a nice match. The kid bumped up. I thought Cort Myers’ match was a nice match. I think they were pretty evenly matched and Cort dominated.”

Shockey was paired with Austin Miller, who wrestled up from 172 pounds to face Shockey at 189 pounds.

Shockey scored first on a takedown, but Miller reversed for two points. Shockey escaped and scored two more points with a takedown to lead 5-2 after the first period. Shockey pinned Miller in 3:08 for the Tribe’s fourth pin of the meet.

At 285 pounds, James Buchanan’s Jimmy McDowell nearly turned Cort Myers early in their match. However, Myers seized the momentum with a takedown and scored three nearfall points to lead 5-0 after the first period.

It took Myers only nine seconds from the start of the second period to pin McDowell to account for the final score.

“James Buchanan’s trying to rebuild,” Swink said. “You can’t expect to come in and just expect you’re going to roll them over. You gotta come in and wrestle. They have some good kids. The Brake boys (Nathan and Alex) are solid wrestlers. Clayton’s match over Nathan was a very good match for him to win, because Nathan is a good wrestler.”

Clayton Costella eked out a 5-3 decision against Nathan Brake at 160 pounds. Costella snapped a 1-1 tie with a takedown in the second period. Brake tied the bout with a takedown, but Costella scored on a reversal for the winning margin.

Garrett Price pinned Alex Brake in 4:29 of the 139-pound match. Price was winning 6-2 at the time of the fall.

Steven Howard recorded a 13-4 major decision in the 127-pound match.

JB’s Jeremy Minor pinned Jawaun Ballard in 1:04 for the Rockets lone win of the contest.

The going was much tougher on Tuesday when Waynesboro visited Chambersburg in a non-league contest.

The Trojans took a quick 12-0 lead on back-to-back falls at 120 pounds and 126 pounds.

Waynesboro’s Jayden Rooney earned a 5-2 decision at 132 pounds and Garrett Price fought the good fight before coming up short to Logan Mickey, 5-3 at 138 pounds. Calvin Myers lost a 7-3 decision at 145 pounds, and Garrett Lowans picked up three team points when he gutted out a sudden victory against Noah Valentine in the 152-pound bout.

The Indians then recorded consecutive pins at 160 pounds and 172 pounds to tie the score 18-18.

Chambersburg turned up the heat by winning the final five matches, all by fall.

Waynesboro returns to the mat on Saturday morning when the Indians will compete in the Central Dauphin Duals beginning at 9 a.m.
