HARRISBURG—Today marks the birthday of Beverly Cleary, author of the popular children’s book series “Ramona Quimby.”

Cleary, who died last year at age 104, was an advocate for reading. When her children were young, they participated in DEAR at school and their enthusiasm for the special reading activity inspired Cleary to write the event into Ramona’s life in her book, “Ramona Quimby, Age 8.”

In honor of Cleary and in support of literacy, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education Dr. Noe Ortega reminds families to make reading a priority and suggest they Drop Everything and Read today.
